Well, its been almost 9 or 10 years since I started playing guitar. So to give you the low down and dirty way to learn, I'm the right guy to ask. I'm self-taught, but I can play like Slash and Hendrix, so if you wanna learn keep reading. The first set of tips are here for the people who want to just learn the light stuff, like chords and songs you could strum and sing along. I'm actually sick and tired of all these "guitar freaks" that just wanna learn how to play fast and learn all these scales and shit. I've played with many of them, but in the end it gets really confined. These guys will just tend to stick to rigid "rules" and you cannot really expand yourself in terms of musical expression, which is the whole point of music I think. You want to really make people "feel" rather than just play some repetitive fast notes in a scale. That just gets really boring.
Step Two:
Learn how to tune your guitar, that is the most basic step, and you cannot play unless your guitar is n good tuning. Get used to realizing what sounds good and what doesn't. What I mean is, try to learn what sounds out of tune as opposed to in tune. This is a good excercise to train your ear. If you learn how to play, but can't tell if it's out of tune and sounds like shit, you'll sound like shit so get everything right the first time by tuning your guitar. They usually have all these gadgets out there that help you tune. If you really are lazy and want to use that do it, but training your ear is the one most important thing to do, so if I were you I would do it off by your own ear so that you can traing yourself instead of relying on all these gadgets. In the end however, these gadgets may be of convenience, but train your ear first.
